
01 Mar A tasty grain-free hot cereal option
As far as “diets” go, I would say I’m a big supporter of focusing on all the amazing foods one CAN have as opposed to focusing on what to eliminate or condemn. Externally imposed boundaries just lead to a whole pile of “shoulds” and “shouldn’ts”, guilt, and eventual unhappiness. And let’s be honest, shouldn’t fuelling our body’s feel awesome?! I believe it is much more important to focus on what foods make your body feel good rather than try to fit within a certain prescribed diet parameter. Perhaps eating a more vegan diet is entirely appropriate for you at a given time in your life. But, I would suggest, if and when you feel your body craving meat, you give yourself permission to seek out a responsibly sourced option and fuel your body with what it is needing at the time. Our body’s and its surroundings are constantly changing. I believe it’s a bit naive to presume our diet isn’t an evolving and ever changing process as well. In my holistic nutrition studies, I think this is the biggest gift I can pass along to those with nutritional concerns: treat eating as a mindful practice; tune into what makes you feel good on a cellular level; be continually curious about your body and what makes it thrive!
Having said all this, at this time in my life, I truly feel I function a little bit better, and have more mental clarity when I tend toward grain-free meal options. I have always had an affinity for a “hot cereal” breakfast on a chilly winter day, so was naturally keen to find a yummy grain-free substitute. Give it a whirl and let me know what you think! Nut & Seed N-oatmeal
1/4 cup shredded coconut
1/4 cup soft nuts of choice (ie walnuts, brazil nuts, macadamia are all great!)
1 TBSP chia seeds
1 TBSP flax seeds
1 TBSP pumpkin seeds
1 TBSP sunflower seeds
1 tsp cinnamon or favourite spices (Spice Sanctuary‘s Sweet Delight Spice Blend is also super awesome for a more unique flavour)
pinch of himalayan rock salt
pinch of vanilla powder
1-1 3/4 cups warm water (depending on desired consistency)
-Place all ingredients in your blender to beak down into a chunky meal consistency
-Add warm water (not boiling to preserve raw nutrient qualities of all the awesome ingredients) and continue to process until smooth, but not pasty
-Serve in a bowl topped with fresh fruit and ENJOY
-Rock your day fuelled with a wholesome breakfast
